One question that seems to come up a lot is whether or not you can get to Merthyr Tydfil from Cardiff on a road bike using the Taff Trail.
In our humble opinion you can indeed follow the Taff Trail to Merthyr on a road bike, however you will reach a point where some improvisation is necessary.
Most of the trail from Cardiff to Merthyr is reasonably smooth and absolutely fine for a road or cross bike with 28mm tires or bigger. However, after the pub at Abercynon the trail leads you onto an old tram road that becomes a dirt track between Quakers Yard and Pontygwaith Farm.
The main problem is the old Tram Road Side. It’s a dirt track with raised stones from the old tram system, but it’s a little too rough for skinny tires. However, you can take the Cardiff Road in Quakers Yard to the other side of Edwardsville and take a left onto Pontygwaith Lane to rejoin the trail.
However, at this point you might as well stay on Cardiff Road until you end up in Merthyr Tydfil –you’ll make more progress and not have to deal with some of the inconveniences the Taff Trail often presents.
