Bute Park Commuter Route

Placed slap bang in the middle of town Bute Park is an excellent way to cut miles of busy roads out of your commute. However, during the winter the main gates will likely be shut by the time you finish work.

However, you may or may not be aware that there’s a “commuter route” that runs from the Millennium Bridge to the College of Music & Drama.

The winter commuter access route through Bute Park between the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (Fisher’s Bridge) entrance & Millennium Bridge (Sophia Gardens) is open until 7pm each evening.

All other entrances will close half an hour before sunset, please see onsite signage for weekly closing times, or download a copy of our weekly closing times at the top of this page.

It’s open from 7am until 7pm every day, by which point most of the traffic will have subsided should you have to go around to reach Canton or head south to Grangetown and Penarth.

It is pitch-black however, so a big front light might not be such a bad idea…

  1. Hi,

Is the bike door next to the pedestrian exit-only turnstile opened as well at the RWCMD gate? If not, it could be difficult to exit with the bike…

    Cheers,
    Ivan.

    1. Hi Ivan, the gate at the RWCMD and the Millennium bridge are closed at 7pm. After that you have to use the pedestrian-only turnstile. However, you can go around the park instead by following the cycle path through the north road car park up and taking a left after the long wall, crossing Blackweir bridge and heading back towards town.
      Hope this helps
      Gavin
