We took a ride up to the Hengoed viaduct and we thought it would make for a nice circular route for you to try.
It’s just under 40km in length and it starts and ends in Taffs Well.
Follow Cardiff Road up to Treforest Estate and take Main Avenue to Upper Boat. Stay on the A4054 (Cardiff Road) until you reach the University of South Wales and take Pentrebach Road from the roundabout. Stay on this road until you reach Cilfynydd and take a right AFTER Pant-Du Road and head towards Llanfabon.
Take a left when you reach a T-junction, followed by a right onto the A472 heading to Ystrad Mynach. When you reach Tredomen head straight over the roundabout and turn onto the trail for Parc Penallta. Follow the trail until you reach the viaduct. Stop here for a breather and a photo, before heading onto the A472 for a few yards and then taking a left onto Tabor Road. Follow Tabor Road to Vale View, followed by Hill View and finally Park Road. Settle in for a few steep descents into Bedwas, then Caerphilly town centre before following NCN Route 4 all the way back to Taffs Well via the Penrhos Cutting and the Taff Trail.
It should take around two hours at a steady pace and the vast majority of it is on quiet lanes, cycle paths and NCN routes. There’s a few spells on busier roads, but they’re not especially busy or fast and they are few and far between.
There’s one major climb on the route, but as climbs go, it is nowhere near as bad as Egwlysilan, but it should provide a fairly stiff challenge for most.
Thanks to our friend David for the ride and for showing us the route.
