Inspired by a similarly titled WalesOnline article aimed at drivers, we though we’d take a look at places you could go that were no more than an hour or so’s ride (ok, sometimes closer to two…) from Cardiff.
As our starting point, we’ll use Sophia Gardens. Most trails lead here, so it seems like the best place to start. However, some routes to these places will vary in difficulty, but where there are links, you’ll find a route article with more detail.
- St Fagans
- Penarth Pier
- Roath Park Lake
- Castle Coch
- Cosmeston Lakes
- Caerphilly Castle
- Cafe Velo, Llantwit Major
- Hengoed Viaduct
- The Blue Anchor
- Cardiff Wales Airport
- Porthkerry Park
- Cowbridge
- Tredegar House & Country Park
- Goldcliff
- The Wenallt (beware, very steep hill)
- Barry Island
- Celtic Manor
- Peterston Super-Ely
- Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar
- Welsh Hawking Centre
- Hensol Castle
Aside from having a bit of fun trying to work out points of interest that were accessible by bike within a reasonable timeframe, there was another motivation for doing this.
A number of the entries in this list are interesting places to go that we often ignore, simply because we live here. However, Cardiff & the wider region can be surprisingly good fun if you try to get into the mind of a tourist.
These are also places that we often pass on our rides and, some of the entries in the list are covered by routes we’ve already done.
The summer is coming, so we’ll continue to work on turning all of these into links. If there are any that you think we should have included, let us know in the comments!
Hi there,
Love all the routes and I’m looking to try some out soon.
Is there a way of making the gpx files for the rides easily downloadable?
I’ve figured out a way using http://gotoes.org/strava/Export_GPX_File_From_Garmin_Connect_Course.php
and pulling the garmin connect address from the plugin frame info.
But that might be a bit too complex for some people.

Hi Jack, I’ve added a GPX file to the Hail to the King route. I wondered if you wouldn’t mind being our guinea pig & seeing if it worked for you? https://www.cardiffbybike.com/2016/02/12/hail-to-the-king-baby-a-tour-around-the-vale/

Could try cycling up the Mon and Brec Canal from Newport 40 odd miles up to Brecon lot of Pubs, several chip shops three Towns Cwmbran, Pontypool and Abergavvenny and a lot of villages on route.
Railway stations at Newport, Cwmban, Pontypool and Abergavenny gets you up or down in hour past main roads to interesting bits.
