When we published our short list of our most challenging local climbs, little did we know just how much discussion it would create.
We could not be more pleased that it has inspired you all to talk & share your favourite climbs. It was inevitable that we’d miss a few off. We wanted to keep it reasonably short, but we also wanted to stick to the ones we had done recently in order to judge how intense they were.
What we had also neglected to consider was the off-road climbs that we have in the area. We’ve so far been fairly road-centric since we got started, but for every on-road climb there is likely to be an off-road alternative. We do have access to a mountain bike and will endeavour to spend more time through the summer testing out some of the trails.
Your suggestions have been coming through since the article was posted, so below you will find a list of the climbs we’ve been sent by way of the comments section, twitter and facebook.
This list will of course grow as more suggestions are added, so please keep them coming.
On-road climbs
- Leckwith road to Llandough
- Van Road to Draethen (Tai Derwen Climb)
- Lisvane to Maenllywd
- Thornhill to Travellers Rest
- Heol Goch to Pentyrch
- Graig Road from Lisvane
- Tongwynlais to Blaengwynlais
- Gwaelod-y-Garth to Mountain Road
- Barrage to Stanwell Crescent
- Culverhouse Cross to St Nicholas
- Newport Road to Rumney Hill
What about Llandough Hill. Not very long, but very steep.

Ok ROAD bikers have any of you taken on the climb from Lisvane to Rudry common?
I ride MTB and this hill puts me in the lowest gear on my 27 speed set on a regular basis.
I will say if your riding £3-4000 of Bianchi then this route may not be for you.
It is road but probably more suited to gravel bike than road bike.
Scope it out in a car first if your brave enough as it’s single track and through a farm so there is a chance you’ll meet farm machines on the road, also it’s a concrete road at one point because it’s too steap to lay tarmack!
I’ve riden all the cardiff hill climbs and this is the only one I still hate all the way to the top.
A good start point is the Black Griffin pub in Lisvane from there you head left on the main road then first left on to Heol-Y-Delyn then right on to Llwyn Y Pia RD.
Follow until you reach Graig RD and keep going.
Pass the Ty Mawr pub zig zag through a few houses and bare left on to the unamed road that leads to the farms.
I have a few names for this road, all of which are four lettered.
I like to ride solo but have taken two friends out on rides that include this climb and both failed.
Take a look and give it a go 😉
