There’s an inescapable sadness pervading Cardiff By Bike HQ today. This morning we learned that ultra-endurance legend Mike Hall had lost his life competing in the Indian Pacific Wheel Race. Mike was known to a few of us here in Cardiff, particularly those who got to ride an Audax or two with him, or even Mike’s own Valleycat events. Whilst we have been a little pre-occupied with Cardiff’s Active Travel Consultation, it’s worth remembering that our neighbouring counties are going through the same process. Cardiff is actually quite small and quick to traverse by bike, meaning that many of us may start our journeys in the Vale, Caerphilly, Newport or RCT. We need to be sure the key routes link up. Get on your bikes and ride! On Saturday 14th January 25 women and girls took to Cardiff on two wheels. The ride set off from The Bike Shed in Pontcanna and four Breeze Champions lead the group on a 11 mile loop to Cardiff Bay; not forgetting the obligatory coffee stop at Coffi Co! The ride marked the beginning of the female cycling community, Wheel Women. This is a partnership between Sport Cardiff’s Girls Together, Welsh Cycling and The Bike Shed which will provide regular organised rides in Cardiff. Rail Disruptions over Christmas…

If you are planning to work during the Christmas period and you normally travel by train, you may wish to rethink that plan. Network Rail is planning a number of upgrades (including the addition of Platform 8 at Central) between Christmas Eve and 2nd January 2017. The most affected days are 27 and 28 December and 1 and 2 January, when replacement bus services will be running. Arriva Trains Wales said their planners had been “working very hard to minimise disruption” but urged customers to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys. Weekend closures for Taff Mead Embankment Railway Bridge

Taff Trail users take note! Network Rail is closing the underpass linking the Taff Mead Embankment stretch of the Trail with Fitzhamon Embankment. The closures will be for the next two weekends, the 22nd and 29th October. Network Rail has told residents it will mean the pedestrian walkway underneath the bridge – also part of the Taff Trail – will be closed “for approximately 24 hours” on the weekends of October 22-23 and 29-30. Training! Level 2 On-Road Child Cyclist Training Course – Cardiff Council

The Council is holding a number of child cyclist training courses during August, aimed at children over 9 years old. A course is being held during the school holiday at the Road Safety Centre in Maindy for children aged 9 years and over. The course runs over four mornings and costs £10 per child and is open to all Cardiff children but they must be able to ride a bike under control and must bring a roadworthy bike.
