There’s a lot to be said for a good climb, but Llanwonno takes some beating. Not quite an “epic” climb as far as the top 100 list goes, but it sure is a tall task easily accessible from Pontypridd town centre. The route we have for you is around 40KM from Plan2Ride in Tongwynlais, but there are other routes to Pontypridd that you may wish to consider if you want to avoid the traffic and the dual carriageway through Ponty. You could follow the Taff Trail all the way up if you prefer, or use NCN Route 4 from the … Continue reading The Graigwen Road Loop
Here’s a great little ride for someone looking for a climb or two. It starts and ends in Tongwynlais, but goes all the way up to Nelson. Along the way you’ll face a couple of climbs, but as climbs go … Continue reading The Nelson Loops
Don’t let this route’s length fool you. It may only be around 28km, but that includes two stiff climbs that add up to around 500m of ascent.
Mercifully, it now includes a bike café after the first climb and some stunning scenery. There’s also a very nice pub on the way back down to ground level. Continue reading Twin Peaks – Two mountains in one ride…
If you fancy a reasonably short ride with a stiff climb, you’ll be pleased to know we have one for you. We’d suggest that this was one for the confident cyclist, as there’s some time spent on the dual carriageway … Continue reading A Loop Around the Graig
If you are ever in the need for a quick sprint to somewhere for cake & a refreshing beverage, the Seawall Tea Rooms is for you. Just 20 miles from Cardiff Bay, the Seawall Tea Rooms is a flat, easy ride along NCN Route 4 and boy do they love us cyclists. Leaving the Millennium Centre you head down Schooner Way and take a right at the lights. Head straight over the next two roundabouts and into the streets of Tremorfa (you can head down Rover Way if you prefer, but it’s a horrid road to cycle on) until you … Continue reading Cardiff Bay to Seawall Tea Rooms
Here’s a short, sharp ride for anyone looking for an hour out after dinner. It starts on Newport Road, takes you down to Duffryn in Newport before bringing you back over the hill from Bassaleg to St Mellons and back down Newport Road. The easy bit… This is a 20 mile ride of two halves. The first bit is the easy bit. The coast road through Wentloog on a sunny day is a beautiful thing. It’s incredibly flat, the surface is quite good and it provides an opportunity to find a rhythm you can stick to. There are no traffic … Continue reading The Bassaleg Loop
If you get bored of trying to tackle Caerphilly Mountain from Rhiwbina Hill, or you simply feel the need to make life difficult for yourself, here’s a climb and a half for you. From Sophia Gardens, you head north through Llandaff, Radyr, Morganstown, Taffs Well, Treforest Estate and up into Pontypridd. Follow the signs to the golf club and buckle up, it’s about to get a little tough. Take a right onto Common Road and then a left onto Tygwyn Road. Once you’ve reached the 1000ft mark, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s mostly downhill from here! Rejoin the … Continue reading Eglwysilan and back
